The 12th House (Vyaya Bhava) in Vedic Astrology

The twelfth house is the letting go: expenses and losses, sleep and solitude, distant and foreign places, retreat, and moksha — the liberation the whole chart is quietly moving toward.

What the 12th house governs

Vyaya means expenditure — what leaves. The twelfth house describes spending and loss, but also everything that happens away from the visible world: sleep and dreams, hospitals and ashrams, foreign residence, private pleasures, charity, and the dissolution of the ego in spiritual practice. It is the last of the three dusthanas and the last of the three moksha houses (4, 8, 12) — the house where the story of the self is finally set down.

Planets in the 12th house

Ketu here is the renunciate's placement — a natural pull toward liberation and an ease with solitude. Saturn makes expenses disciplined and can give a settled life abroad. Venus in the twelfth is classically excellent for comfort, bed pleasures and good sleep; Jupiter protects through generosity and faith. Rahu pulls strongly toward foreign lands; the Sun or Moon here can feel their light dimmed and want time alone to recover it. Mars in the twelfth is a Mangal Dosha placement.

Loss as the road to freedom

Read one way, the twelfth house is simply the outflow column of a life — money spent, energy given, time asleep. Read another, it is the house of release: what a person is finally able to stop holding. The twelfth lord in the sixth or eighth forms a vipareeta raja yoga, loss turned to gain. Its remedies are the gentlest in the tradition: charity, rest, retreat and meditation.
