The 1st House (Tanu Bhava) in Vedic Astrology

The first house is the ascendant itself — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It is the body you were given, the temperament you meet the world with, and the lens through which every other house is read.

What the 1st house governs

Everything in Jyotish is counted from here. The lagna — the degree rising in the east at the moment of birth — sets which sign occupies the first house, and every other house follows in order. The first house describes the body and its resilience, the face you present, your natural pace and instincts, and how you begin things. A well-supported lagna is the single best protection a chart has: it lets even difficult placements elsewhere be carried with strength.

Planets in the 1st house

Planets here colour the whole personality, because they sit in the body itself. The Sun gives presence and a need to be seen; the Moon makes a person visibly responsive to the room; Mars adds drive and a quick temper; Jupiter lends optimism and a generous frame; Saturn brings seriousness and slow, durable strength. Mars in the first house is one of the placements that forms Mangal Dosha.

Strong lagna, pressed lagna

The lagna lord — the planet ruling the rising sign — is read as carefully as the house itself: its sign, house and dignity say where the self goes to find its footing. A lagna lord in a kendra or trikona, or exalted, gives a person who recovers quickly and lands on their feet. A weak or afflicted lagna lord can show as low vitality or a self-image that lags behind real ability; the classical remedies strengthen that lord rather than the house.

Common questions

What is the 1st house in Vedic astrology?

The first house, or Tanu Bhava, is the ascendant (lagna): the sign rising in the east at birth. It governs the body, vitality, appearance and temperament, and every other house is counted from it.

Which planet is the karaka of the 1st house?

The Sun is the natural significator of the first house — the self and its vitality. The lagna lord (the ruler of the rising sign) is read alongside it.
