What the 2nd house governs
If the first house is who you are, the second is what you hold. It describes earned and inherited wealth, the habit of saving or spending, the early family and its values, and — distinctively in Jyotish — vak, speech: the quality of the voice, honesty, and the power of words. Food and the pleasures of the mouth belong here too, which is why the same house that gives a good table can also give an overfull one.
Planets in the 2nd house
Jupiter here is the classic sign of a full treasury and a wise, kind voice. Venus gives a sweet tongue and a taste for fine things; Mercury a quick, precise speaker. Saturn tends to make wealth slow and earned; Rahu can bring sudden money and an unconventional voice; Ketu a certain detachment from possessions. Mars here contributes to Mangal Dosha in several traditions.
The 2nd house and the family you came from
The second house is read with the fourth for the home: the fourth is the mother and the roof, the second the wider household — its meals, its money, its manner of speaking. Difficult planets here often describe a childhood where money or words were fraught, and the adult work of learning to hold both more easily. It is also one of the two maraka houses, which in classical texts concerns the timing of the end of life — a technical use, not a daily worry.
Common questions
What does the 2nd house represent in Vedic astrology?
Dhana Bhava governs wealth and savings, the family of origin, speech, food, and the face. Jupiter is its karaka for wealth and Mercury for speech.
Is the 2nd house good for money?
It is the primary house of accumulated wealth. Its lord and Jupiter's condition show how easily money is kept; the 11th house shows how it comes in.
