How to read a planet in a house

Jyotish counts whole-sign houses from the ascendant, so a planet's house is simply how many signs it sits from the rising sign. Three things then decide how the placement behaves: the house family (planets act with full strength in the kendras, bring fortune in the trikonas, meet resistance in the dusthanas, and grow with effort in the upachayas), the planet's dignity in the sign it occupies (exalted, own sign, friendly, or debilitated), and whether it has dig bala — directional strength — in that house: the Sun and Mars in the 10th, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st, Saturn in the 7th.

Which house is a planet strongest in?

Each planet has dig bala, directional strength, in one angle: the Sun and Mars in the 10th, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st, and Saturn in the 7th. Dignity by sign matters just as much.

Is a malefic planet always bad in a house?

No. Malefics such as Saturn and Mars do their best work in the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11), where their hardness becomes stamina; benefics are happiest in the kendras and trikonas.
