What Saturn does in the 12th house
Saturn brings discipline, delay, endurance, labour and the lessons of time; the 12th house is where a chart keeps expenses, loss, foreign lands, isolation, sleep and dreams, hospitals, spirituality, liberation. Put together, the placement says that this department of life is run on Saturn's terms — it is where that planet's themes are most visibly lived out, and where its condition (sign, dignity, aspects) is felt first.
The twelfth house is the letting go: expenses and losses, sleep and solitude, distant and foreign places, retreat, and moksha — the liberation the whole chart is quietly moving toward.
Is Saturn in the 12th house good or bad?
The 12th is a dusthana, and a malefic here is read two ways: Saturn can press on the house's themes, or it can guard them, keeping difficulty at a distance. The house lord's condition and any benefic aspect decide which. In practice this placement asks for care rather than fear.
Reading it in a full chart
No placement is read alone. Three checks change everything: the sign that occupies your 12th house (a planet in its exaltation or own sign gives its best, in its debilitation its most awkward), the condition of the 12th-house lord, and the aspects falling on the house. Timing comes from the Saturn mahadasha and the transits: a placement that has been quiet for years switches on when its period arrives.
When the placement is pressed, the classical remedies are Saturn's own — Saturday observance, service to the elderly and the poor, and patient, honest work — and the house's: tending release · foreign lands · moksha deliberately rather than by default.
