What Mercury does in the 5th house
Mercury brings intellect, speech, commerce, skill and quickness of mind; the 5th house is where a chart keeps children, creativity, intelligence, romance, speculation, mantra, past merit. Put together, the placement says that this department of life is run on Mercury's terms — it is where that planet's themes are most visibly lived out, and where its condition (sign, dignity, aspects) is felt first.
The fifth house is what you create: children, ideas, art and play, romance, speculative ventures, and the purva-punya — the stored merit of past good acts — that lets fortune find you.
Is Mercury in the 5th house good or bad?
A benefic in a trikona is one of the happiest things a chart can hold. Mercury in the 5th house protects and expands its themes, and lends grace to the whole chart; the tradition reads it as a source of raja yoga when the house lord is also strong.
Reading it in a full chart
No placement is read alone. Three checks change everything: the sign that occupies your 5th house (a planet in its exaltation or own sign gives its best, in its debilitation its most awkward), the condition of the 5th-house lord, and the aspects falling on the house. Timing comes from the Mercury mahadasha and the transits: a placement that has been quiet for years switches on when its period arrives.
When the placement is pressed, the classical remedies are Mercury's own — Wednesday observance, the Vishnu Sahasranama, and clean, truthful speech — and the house's: tending children · creativity · intellect deliberately rather than by default.
