The 5th House (Putra Bhava) in Vedic Astrology

The fifth house is what you create: children, ideas, art and play, romance, speculative ventures, and the purva-punya — the stored merit of past good acts — that lets fortune find you.

What the 5th house governs

Putra means child, and the fifth house is the house of everything a person brings into being — children first, then the creative mind: ideas, art, performance, games and the pleasure of play. It also governs discernment and intelligence (buddhi), romance before it becomes commitment, speculation and investments, and mantra practice. As a trikona it is one of the three houses of dharma, and classical texts read it for the merit carried in from before.

Planets in the 5th house

Jupiter, its karaka, gives children, wisdom and a teacher's mind. Venus brings artistry and romance; Mercury a sharp, playful intellect; the Sun creative authority and pride in one's children. Saturn or Ketu here can delay or complicate children and make the creative life more disciplined than spontaneous; Rahu pulls toward speculation and unconventional creativity.

Fortune you did not earn this time

The fifth house is read together with the ninth as the seat of luck: the ninth is grace descending, the fifth is merit ascending. A strong fifth house shows as a person whose ideas land, whose children flourish, and whose gambles tend to come off. Where it is pressed, the classical advice is to make merit deliberately — teach, create, give — and let the account refill.
